If hairdressing can be found in a person’s DNA, the owner of Salon Fortelli and Spa is proof of it. Not only are Vince Meleca and his 3 brothers all in the hair salon business. but 6 of his 7 uncles have also chosen hairdressing as a career.
The company name comes from the Italian word fratelli, meaning brothers, and since there are four brothers, it is a fun play on that – Fortelli.
Vince, his brother Gino and daughter Josie, can all be found at the beautiful salon and spa on Queen Street just west of Woodbine. Step into the peaceful space and you immediately feel you’ve been transformed to a world of beauty and serenity.
This year marks 10 years in the Beaches. Fortelli is a stress free space from the moment you step in the door. The recently renovated spa is furnished with state-of-the-art pedicure and manicure stations, treatment rooms and a colour bar.
The majority of the clients come from the Beaches, but their loyal followers also include a couple who’s followed Vince for 35 years, driving in from Barrie, and a teacher who grew up in Vince’s chair, “I used to cut his hair when he had to climb up onto a booster seat.”
“I’ve always liked the people aspect of my business,” explains Vince, “my work is about transformation. People want a change, something new or fun – that is when it’s the best.”
He notes that the Beaches’ clientele keep him motivated and challenged to create a style to fit their individual personalities and lifestyles. “These aren’t people who are just asking for the same trim every month”, he says, “they like to try something different. It keeps me up-to-date and on my toes. We also consult with clients about their lifestyle, find out how much they are committed to upkeep, what styles suit the way they live.”
The Fortelli team is made up of 7 stylists, 3 colour specialists, 4 estheticians, and 2 at the front desk, “we work together, train together, and everyone is part of the success of the business.”
The salon and spa carries high quality products like formaldehyde-free nail polish. Favourite spa packages include a 4-hour “Corporate Stress Package” and a 1-hour “Signature Package”.
In celebration and appreciation for their wide network of clients, suppliers and friends, Fortelli is holding a celebratory fund raising dinner on May 5 at the Toronto Hunt Club in support of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH.)
“After so many years in business,” says Vince, “I wanted to give back in our own way. We picked a cause that gets less profile and hope that we’ll help make some difference.”
“We just want to thank everyone, staff and clients, without them we wouldn’t be a business. ”
