Eat your flowers or you don’t get any chocolate

foodtalklogoDon’t just admire that bouquet – eat it!
Flowers have been eaten since ancient times. They have medicinal as well as nutritional values because many blossoms contain vitamin C and/or vitamin A.

Some common flowers that are edible include carnation, dandelion, lilac, milkweed, nasturium, pansy, rose, sunflower and violet. You may not know that broccoli, cauliflower, and artichokes are also flowers.

Remember, not all flowers are edible. Only trust edible flowers if they are grown like fruits and vegetables specifically to be eaten. Flowers from florists often have been chemically treated.

Bitter is better
The word is out – cocoa and dark chocolate are linked to health benefits. Both contain antioxidants (flavinoids). Cocoa and dark chocolate also may keep high blood pressure down and reduce the blood’s ability to clot, which reduces the risk of stroke and heart attacks.
