Local Roundups:
#1. High Property Tax Assessments:

Current Value Assessment is an important issue to Beaches residents. The Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) recently sent out the 2005 property assessments to all Toronto residents. A community meeting to discuss ideas and proposals was held on Thursday, November 17 at Monarch Park Collegiate Institute. The main issue was that Ward 32 has a 15.8% average increase in property assessment while the city average is 11.93%.

The meeting was hosted by Marilyn Churley, MPP Toronto-Danforth and Michael Prue, MPP Beaches-East York. Guest Speakers include: Sandra Bussin, Deputy Mayor, City Councilor, Ward 32, Beaches-East York (south) Paula Fletcher, City Councilor, Ward 30, Toronto-Danforth Janet Davis, City Councilor, Ward 31, Beaches-East York.

Information on filing a request for reconsideration or appealing an assessment is available at www.mpac.ca and by phone at 1-866-296-6722. You can also contact the Ontario Ombudsman, Andre Marin, who is undertaking a review of MPAC’s decision-making process. He can be reached at: sort@ombudsman.on.ca or in writing at: Mr. Andre Marin, Ombudsman of Ontario, 125 Queen’s Park, Toronto, ON M5S 2C7.
