The Edgy, Urban Cousin

f you do not regularly walk under the overhead sweep of Eastern Avenue, you’ll be surprised to encounter Underpass Park.
This second new park dresses up the underpass with areas for kids to skateboard and stunt cycle. It has quirky (but safe) playground structures. Overhead, attached to the Eastern Avenue flyover,
is a mirrored public artwork called Mirage, by Paul Raff, that maximizes light and creates intrigue in the underpass.
Wherever the sun penetrates through the concrete, trees and ornamental grass plantings soften the landscape. Underpass
Park is creating an intimate meeting spot and active youthful play area in the West Don Lands, a precinct of the city that will welcome thousands of new residents in the years to come.
It’s another award-winning public space by the Phillips,Farevaag, Smallenberg design team, as edgy and urban as Corktown Common is lovely.
