Beaches Living Guide - Spring & Summer 2016 ![]() Letterfrom thedirectorEverything comes full circle! As we prepare the topics for this edition of the Guide, one simple fact keeps repeating itsself - whats's old is new again. As an old lyric tells us, "Don't throw the past away, you might need it some rainy day." We see it in fashion trends, colours, styles, home decor, architecture, urban design - everywhere (if we really think about it and look for it). Yet, it is not just a simple repeat of the past, they are injecting new ideas and concepts to our modern society. We know this "full circle" will not just end here, it will continue when the new becomes the past. The stories of Toronto's shoreline, once a busy industrial port featured in this edition, will take a fresh look at our harbour and how it has come full circle - from its glorious past to mid-century depression, and back again to the flourishing beautiful multi-use Waterfront of today. Once again, we've seen in recent years a return to an appreciation of Toronto's waterways for its sheer beauty and enjoyment. Today we enjoy the lakefront as it's been enjoyed for centuries. By respecting the past and learning from it, our shoreline is once again an invaluable landmark to our city for everyone to enjoy. Each time we learn about our city and neighbouhood, its past, present and future, it reminds us of the wealth that our ancestors left for us to live on. What can we leave our future generations that will make them proud of us? We hope that after reading the stories published in this edition, the next time you set out to take a stroll along the shoreline on one of the various pathways and boardwalks, get out your paddle, take a ferry ride or set sail in a breezy afternoon or warm summer evening, you'll realize that you are repeating what people have done on the lake for hundreds of years, and all of this will be repeated by future generations to come. It puts a smile on my face just thinking about it, would you? Happy Spring, happy Summer! Hong Zhao Beaches Living Guide - Spring & Summer 2016 |
