1873: The Mounties
Mounties have been part of our history for almost as long as we've been a country. The Canadian "Mountie" with his scarlet jacket, widebrimmed hat and beautiful horse can be found on countless Canadian souvenirs and postcards as a symbol of our country.
The first "mounted police" were sent in 1873 to maintain law in our western territories. Over time, the force evolved into the RCMP, with almost 30,000 members. Today, the RCMP's operations include organized crime, terrorism, illicit drugs and national security. The force has also overseen elections for the United Nations.
