1941: Our own Broadcast Network, CBC
On January 1, 1941, CBC News Service and Radio-Canada was formally created as a national broadcast network. Over the next decade, many radio broadcasts such as "Theatre of the Air" took place over CBC with families gathered around the radio.
Starting with just 10 hours of broadcasting, the number of French and English programs steadily increased. With television ready to take off in the 1950s, CBC/RadioCanada then ushered in the age of television with a 15-year plan for the development of television in Canada.
