October 2, 2017: Canada's Astronaut Governor General
This fall, at an installation ceremony inside the Senate Chamber in Ottawa, engineer, songstress, mother, pilot, astronaut, linguist, Olympic flag-bearer, and scuba diver, Julie Payette, became our 29th Governor General. Payette was the first Canadian female to board the International Space Station in 1999. She went on a second space flight in 2009. Payette is the fourth female to be "the Queen's representative in Canada", a tradition that began with Confederation and the signing of the British North American Act, which made Canada a separate "Dominion".
"Your journey through space and through life may be unique, but the qualities which underpin every one of your successes are not."
Justin Trudeau
